ABSTRACT

This study titled “Role of Radio in Promoting Healthy Lifestyles Among Residents of Ehime Mbano” was conducted to assess the contribution of radio health programs in encouraging positive health behaviors among residents of Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were to identify the types of health-related content broadcast by radio stations accessible in Ehime Mbano, examine the level of residents’ exposure to these programs, investigate the influence of radio health programs on health behaviors, assess the perceived effectiveness of radio as a health communication tool, and suggest strategies for improving radio health program impact. The study adopted a survey research design with a target population of 204,340 residents aged 18 years and above. Using the Taro Yamane formula, a sample size of 399 was calculated, out of which 380 valid responses were retrieved and used for analysis. The study utilized stratified random sampling technique to ensure adequate representation of various social groups. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on a four-point Likert scale, and the analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Findings showed that the types of health programs commonly aired include sanitation awareness, disease prevention, nutrition education, and maternal health, with mean scores ranging from 3.01 to 3.24. Exposure to these programs significantly influenced residents’ health behaviors and knowledge, as confirmed by ANOVA results where F = 6.214, p = 0.002 for health behavior, F = 5.832, p = 0.003 for health knowledge, and F = 7.542, p = 0.001 for lifestyle practices, leading to the rejection of all null hypotheses. The study recommended that radio stations should increase the frequency of health broadcasts, deliver programs in local languages, promote interactive sessions, and collaborate with local health professionals to improve the effectiveness of radio health communication.

INTRODUCTION (snippet)

1.1 Background to the Study
Across the globe, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and preventable health conditions continues to rise across due to lifestyle-related risk factors such as poor nutrition, sedentary habits, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption.  While many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa region still contend with infectious diseases, there is a growing epidemiological shift toward lifestyle-related illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases (WHO, 2023). In this region urbanization, changes in dietary patterns, limited physical activity, and increasing stress levels have contributed significantly to the decline in healthy lifestyle practices (Okorie & Umeogu, 2021). The World Bank (2022) emphasizes that although health infrastructure remains underdeveloped in many parts of Africa, a more pressing concern is the limited public awareness of lifestyle-related risk factors and prevention strategies. These realities reveal a critical gap in individual and community-level health knowledge, especially in semi-urban and rural settings where formal health services are sparse and reactive rather than preventive in nature.
In addressing these gaps, health communication has emerged as a strategic instrument for influencing health attitudes and practices among populations with limited access to formal education or healthcare. A healthy lifestyle refers to a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early, often characterized by behaviors such as regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, stress management, and avoidance of harmful habits like smoking or excessive alcohol intake. According to Adebayo and Onyekwere (2021), a healthy lifestyle encompasses “the consistent practice of positive health behaviors that enhance physical, mental, and social well-being, thereby reducing the risk of chronic diseases and promoting overall quality of life.” Health communication encompasses a wide range of activities, including public education campaigns, interpersonal counseling, and mass media interventions, all aimed at enhancing health literacy and promoting behavioral change (Obiezu & Chukwu, 2022).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The global rise in chronic illnesses and preventable diseases has elevated the urgency of adopting and sustaining healthy lifestyle practices. Daily habits such as dietary choices, physical activity, hygiene, rest, and stress management directly influence not only longevity but overall quality of life. In underserved communities like Ehime Mbano in Imo State, Nigeria, where access to quality healthcare remains constrained by economic and infrastructural limitations, the importance of preventive health behavior becomes paramount. For residents of such localities, embracing healthy living is not merely a matter of wellness but a strategy for survival in the face of systemic health service deficiencies. Yet, fostering such behavior requires sustained awareness and culturally resonant communication strategies that can reach a broad audience regardless of literacy or income levels.
Although radio remains one of the most accessible media platforms across rural and peri-urban Nigeria, there is a limited understanding of its actual effectiveness in influencing long-term behavioral change related to health. While it is often used to broadcast health education programs, many of these initiatives lack rigorous evaluation frameworks, raising concerns about their reach, message retention, and practical impact. Moreover, logistical challenges such as intermittent electricity, signal disruptions, illiteracy, and prevailing traditional beliefs can undermine the potential influence of radio-based health communication. In a place like Ehime Mbano, where formal health infrastructure is sparse and public health interventions are irregular, radio could serve as a vital tool for health promotion. However, the absence of empirical data on how residents respond behaviorally to health messages disseminated via radio highlights a significant research gap.
